Moving Forward Coalition Report: Advancing CNA Career Pathways - Toward a Multi-State Approach to Workforce Development in Nursing Homes

Moving Forward CNA Report

The Moving Forward Nursing Home Quality Coalition has released a report on strengthening career advancement opportunities for certified nursing assistants (CNAs) in nursing homes.

The report draws on an April 2026 convening of six state-based Geriatric Workforce Enhancement Programs and key partners that examined how CNA workforce advancement models could be aligned and expanded across states. It identifies barriers created by varying state training and credentialing requirements and presents nine recommendations proposed by participants, including competency-based training standards and specialized CNA roles tied to higher wages.

The Coalition will host a related webinar on Sept. 21 about how nursing homes can strengthen CNA career pathways through partnerships and other professional growth opportunities.
