New York Times Article: With Red Tape Lifted, Dr. Zoom Will See You Now

The New York Times has published an article, "With Red Tape Lifted, Dr. Zoom Will See You Now," as part of The New Old Age series.

"For years, advocates and researchers have urged greater use of telemedicine — delivered by video or phone, through online patient portals or remote monitoring devices — particularly for older adults," the article comments, adding, though, that Medicare adoption was slow and that in traditional Medicare telemedicine payment had been lower than for in-person visits. This has recently changed with COVID-19 and loosened federal restrictions and regulations.

The article also discusses older adults' current experiences of telehealth and cites a John A. Hartford Foundation/The SCAN Foundation-supported NORC survey, "Still, by mid-April more than 20 percent of people over 70 had experienced a telehealth appointment since the start of the pandemic, a nationwide survey by NORC at the University of Chicago found. Almost half said they found the experience equivalent to an in-person visit."
