NYT Article: Nurses With a Mission: Send Older ER Patients Home With Help
The New York Times ran an Associated Press article, "Nurses With a Mission: Send Older ER Patients Home With Help," about innovations in emergency room care for older adults.
"The emergency department is not designed with older adults in mind," said Dr. Scott Dresden, who heads the Geriatric Emergency Department Innovations program at Northwestern. Early research at Northwestern and other hospitals shows care from geriatrics-trained nurses in the ER can reduce the chances of a hospital stay after a patient's emergency visit and for a month afterward.
"The latest nudge is an accreditation program, launched this year. 'We want to have at least 50 certified hospitals by the end of 2018,' said Dr. Kevin Biese of University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine, who leads the accreditation push for the American College of Emergency Physicians."
Dr. Biese co-leads The John A. Hartford Foundation grant, "Developing a National Collaborative to Improve Emergency Department Care of Older Adults," a partnership with the Gary and Mary West Health Institute, American College of Emergency Physicians, American Geriatrics Society, Emergency Nurses Association, and Society for Academic Emergency Medicine.
