Report: Palliative Care in Medicaid - Costing Out the Benefit: Actuarial Analysis of Medicaid Experience
A report was released from the National Academy for State Health Policy (NASHP) to estimate the financial impact of offering palliative care to Medicaid enrollees, including potential cost reductions for members using this benefit.
Currently, no Medicaid programs offer a comprehensive or “stand-alone” palliative care benefit. The actuarial analysis from NASHP and Optumus estimates costs of a Medicaid palliative care benefit and found a potential return on investment ranging from $0.80 to $2.60 for every $1 spent on palliative care. States are interested in learning more about the benefits of palliative care, which can improve quality of life for people with serious illness. This analysis shows that these benefits can also yield cost savings.
This report can be found in NASHP's palliative care resource center for states, supported by The John A. Hartford Foundation.
