Route Fifty Commentary: How States Can Strengthen Support for Family Caregivers

Route Fifty Family Caregiver Support

Route Fifty has published a commentary, "How States Can Strengthen Support for Family Caregivers," by Rani E. Snyder, MPA, vice president for program, JAHF, and Wendy Fox-Grage, MS, MPA, senior policy fellow, NASHP.

The commentary discusses how the U.S. relies heavily on unpaid family caregivers - some 53 million people - to support older adults and people living with disabilities, and talks about a new report that identifies hundreds of actions that federal agencies can adopt to better assist family caregivers. The report, 2022 National Strategy to Support Family Caregivers, from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services also includes more than 150 corresponding actions that states, localities and other sectors can take.

The authors identify two of the report's five goals - growing the home care workforce and expanding employment protections - that state actions would have a significant impact on the lives of family caregivers and those they care for. "States wield incredible influence and have several tools available, including legislation, regulation, Medicaid waivers and health plans to better support family caregivers."
