Trust for America’s Health (TFAH) has released its 2024 public health funding report, The Impact of Chronic Underfunding on America’s Public Health System 2024: Trends, Risks, and Recommendations.

The report tracks federal and state public health funding and highlights the ways in which underfunding has created serious gaps in public health infrastructure including antiquated data systems, insufficient public health laboratory capacity, under-resourced public health workforce and the need for strengthened public health communications.

The report includes recommendations for policy actions by Congress and the Administration to protect health, address disparities, reduce healthcare spending and enhance the country's health and economic security.

One of the policy actions included is to promote health and prevent chronic disease across the lifespan. In the report, TFAH recommends Congress to support Age-Friendly Public Health Systems (AFPHS) by providing $50 million to build public health department capacity to promote the health of older adults.
