Health aging 23

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, in partnership with Trust for America’s Health (TFAH), held a free virtual event September 8-9, "2021 Healthy Aging Symposium," and released its 2021 Workshop Summary Report.

During the symposium, national researchers, state and local health officials, and policymakers from across the United States discussed their work and insights. Attendees learned about the latest science, best practices, and innovative interventions to improve older Americans’ health and well-being. HHS reported on a year-long series of regional workshops featuring the Age-Friendly Health Systems and Age-Friendly Public Health Systems initiatives and released "Healthy Aging Workshop: Preparing for the Future of Aging."

The symposium built upon the lessons learned during the COVID-19 pandemic and focused on addressing the social determinants of health to reduce health disparities and improve long-term recovery and resilience. The symposium focused on:

  • Sharing the latest research and successful approaches to healthy aging
  • Connecting insights and ideas across sectors
  • Addressing barriers and reducing health disparities among older Americans
  • Building on lessons learned during the COVID-19 pandemic

Policymakers, researchers, and professionals from across sectors – including public health, aging services, healthcare, housing, education, transportation, justice, and recreation – had the opportunity to connect and learn from each other. Anyone who works to improve the lives of older adults was encouraged to join.
