GEDC Webinar Recording: COVID-19 in Older Adults - Key Points for ED Providers

The Geriatric Emergency Department Collaborative (GEDC) held a webinar March 30, “COVID-19 in Older Adults: Key Points for ED Providers.”

The GEDC released an article last week, “COVID-19 in Older Adults: Key Points for Emergency Department Providers.” The webinar referenced that article and covered the following objectives:

  • Introduced emergency physicians to the epidemiology and clinical presentation of COVID-19 especially in older patients;
  • Highlighted the challenges that older patients may face and pose in the ED and hospital during this pandemic (e.g. polymorbidities and impact on viral illness, difficulty of identifying infection because of blunted fever reaction);
  • Provided a forum for discussion of the 15 key points in the article;
  • Considered the proposition that for frail polymorbid older people (both in long-term care and living at home), prevention may be the only management strategy available particularly as hospital beds and ICU beds become overwhelmed;
  • Emphasized the importance of advanced care planning and establishing end-of-life goals of care.
