The National Alliance for Caregiving (NAC) has released a new white paper, "Caregiving For The Caregiver: Incentivizing Medical Providers to Include Caregivers as Part of the Treatment Team," analyzing the existing impact of incentives on caregiver services.

In the report, NAC experts discuss incentives in the existing Medicare program that could help push health systems and providers to offer more robust support to family caregivers. The white paper discusses significant components that contribute to systemic setbacks like variation in payment models, insurance coverage, healthcare settings, and provider types. Lack of standards of care, limited awareness of revenue opportunities, and poor accessibility of billing code information are also points of discussion.

The paper highlights the 4Ms Program at RUSH, demonstrating what caregiver support could look like and shows early promise of how patients, caregivers, and health systems can benefit from caregiver services. NAC builds upon the prevailing evidence base of caregiver support, specifying solution models incorporating patient-targeted and caregiver-targeted services.
