AGS Names Diane Meier, MD, the 2013 Edward Henderson Award Winner

The American Geriatrics Society (AGS) announced that Diane E. Meier, MD, will receive its Edward Henderson Award and will present the Henderson State-of-the-Art Lecture at the 2013 AGS Annual Scientific Meeting in Grapevine, TX. Dr. Meier is Director of the Center to Advance Palliative Care (CAPC) at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City, and a grantee of the John A. Hartford Foundation.

The American Geriatrics Society (AGS) announced that Diane E. Meier, MD, will receive its Edward Henderson Award and will present the Henderson State-of-the-Art Lecture at the 2013 AGS Annual Scientific Meeting in Grapevine, TX.

The AGS is honoring Dr. Meier with the Henderson Award for her long standing and highly valued contributions to the field of geriatrics. Dr. Meier's Henderson Lecture, Palliative Care: Transforming the Care of Serious Illness, will focus on how palliative medicine and geriatrics have developed an evidence base, demonstrating improved value-better quality, and as an epiphenomenon of better quality, lower cost. Dr. Meier will discuss some of the challenges in improving access to these proven models to all persons in need by working together. The Henderson Lecture is scheduled on Friday, May 3 from 10:00 to 11:00 AM.

Dr. Meier is Director of the Center to Advance Palliative Care (CAPC) at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City. She is also the Catherine Gaisman Professor of Medical Ethics and Professor of Geriatrics and Internal Medicine at Mount Sinai. Dr. Meier is the recipient of numerous awards, including the MacArthur Foundation fellowship ("genius award") in 2008, Founders Award of the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization 2007, AARP's 50th Anniversary Social Impact Award 2008, Castle Connelly's Physician of the Year Award 2009, the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine Lifetime Achievement Award 2009, the HealthLeaders HL20 for 2010, and the Medal of Honor from the American Cancer Society in 2012. Dr. Meier has published extensively in all major peer-reviewed medical journals, edited the first textbook on geriatric palliative care, four editions of Geriatric Medicine and most recently Palliative Care: Transforming the Care of Serious Illness.
