AHRQ Issue Brief: State of the Science and Future Directions To Improve Diagnostic Safety in Older Adults
The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) has released an issue brief, the "State of the Science and Future Directions to Improve Diagnostic Safety in Older Adults."
Adults over the age of 65 are at an increased risk of misdiagnosis and delayed diagnosis for reasons including multiple existing conditions, aging stereotypes, medication complications, and communication barriers.
The AHRQ issue brief outlines of the current state of science regarding the diagnostic process in older adults, highlighting specific challenges and provides targeted recommendations for enhancing practice, advancing research, and shaping policy to minimize the risk of diagnostic errors.
Cheryl Phillips, M.D., of The John A. Hartford Foundation, was acknowledged for her comments on an earlier draft of this issue brief.
