American Hospital Association Blog: Trustees Can Help Lead the Way to Age-Friendly Health Systems

AHA Blog Terry Fulmer AFHS

The American Hospital Association (AHA) has published a blog by Terry Fulmer, PhD, RN, FAAN, president of The John A. Hartford Foundation, titled, "Trustees Can Help Lead the Way to Age-Friendly Health Systems."

In the blog, Dr. Fulmer talks about a conundrum we face in the United States: while we revere longevity, we don't display the same level of enthusiasm for actually taking care of older people. The concept of an age-friendly health system, she notes, "a vanguard in the effort to ensure older adults receive safe, evidence-based care focused on what matters to them."

Working in close partnership with the AHA, the Institute for Healthcare Improvement and the Catholic Health Association of the United States, JAHF has strongly supported the creation and spread of the idea of age-friendly health systems. Dr. Fulmer explains the 4Ms Framework, what Matters, Medications, Mentation and Mobility, that the initiative rests on. It is "our aim is to have every care provider become an age-friendly health system."

"As trustees, I urge everyone to check the age-friendly status of your organization." Consider joining the tuition-free AHA Action Community that provides access to webinars, coaching and a rich array of learning tools. The next one starts this September.
