American Society of Consultant Pharmacists Recognition Program: Age-Friendly Pharmacy Recognition

ASCP Introduces Age Friendly Pharmacy AFP Recognition

The American Society of Consultant Pharmacists (ASCP), in partnership with the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy’s Peter Lamy Center on Drug Therapy and Aging, has launched its new Age-Friendly Pharmacy Recognition Program.

Age-Friendly Pharmacy (AFP) is an organizational recognition where the pharmacy itself demonstrates a commitment to age-friendly care aligned with the 4Ms Framework of the Age-Friendly Health Systems initiative (What Matters, Medication, Mentation and Mobility). The AFP recognition highlights pharmacies that are leading the way in meeting the needs of older adults through reliable, person-centered care. Recognition is open to all pharmacies.

Building on ASCP's Age-Friendly Pharmacist digital badge program, which recognizes individual pharmacists for applying age-friendly principles in their practice, the new AFP recognition expands this effort to entire pharmacies and their teams. The program includes three components:

  1. Age-Friendly Pharmacy Recognition: Acknowledges pharmacies and their teams for implementing the 4Ms Framework across settings, helping older adults age safely and independently through person-centered, age-friendly care.

  2. Long-Term Care Pharmacy Performance and Service Criteria: Recognizes pharmacies that apply the 4Ms and meet CMS definitions of long-term care pharmacy services to improve medication safety and care coordination.

  3. ASCP Age-Friendly Clinically Integrated Network through CPESN: Connects AFP pharmacies with payers and providers to deliver reimbursable, outcomes-based clinical services that support sustainable, community-based care.

A new Guide for Recognition of Age-Friendly Pharmacy has been published by ASCP and the Lamy Center. To obtain the Age-Friendly Pharmacy recognition, pharmacies will:

  • Secure an ASCP business membership
  • Attest to achievement of age-friendly criteria
  • Document that more than 50% of pharmacists have achieved Age-Friendly Pharmacist recognition (Badge) or are board-certified geriatric pharmacists (BCGP)
