Amy Berman's Story on Palliative Care in Health Affairs

Four years after her diagnosis with incurable inflammatory breast cancer, Hartford Foundation Senior Program Officer Amy Berman reflects on her choice for palliative care and her experiences on this "road less taken."

In the latest Health Affairs Blog, Hartford Foundation Senior Program Officer Amy Berman reflects on her choice for palliative care after being diagnosed with incurable, inflammatory breast cancer nearly four years ago. Since first sharing her story two years ago in Health Affairs in the piece entitled, "Living Life in My Own Way—and Dying That Way as Well," Ms. Berman continues to describe her experiences on this "road less taken" and the changes seen in the policy and practice landscape surrounding palliative care issues. The growing awareness is also shown in a recent Health Affairs piece by Dr. Diane Meier, Hartford grantee and director of the Center to Advance Palliative Care, in which she explores physicians' understanding of palliative care and views on overtreatment.
