Applied Clinical Informatics Paper on Digital Access

Applied Clinical Information has published a research article on "Solutions for Increased Adoption of Patient Portal Shared Access: A Human-Centered Design Approach Using the Double Diamond Model."

Achieving digital health equity is crucial as reliance on electronic systems increases, but shared access—a vital functionality offering identity credentials to care partners—has been hindered by complicated user interfaces and low awareness.

This paper describes an evaluation of a quality improvement study to increasing the awareness and adoption of shared access for older adults and their care partners.

The study engaged a diverse group of community partners (including older adults, care partners, and health system leaders) through focus groups and interviews, and focused on identifying pain points related to shared access registration. The research demonstrated a practical application of human-centered design methods methods in developing effective solutions for enhancing shared access for older adults, and all people using patient portals.
