ASA Blog: Nursing Home Deaths Are Predictable
The American Society on Aging (ASA) has published a blog by Joanne Lynn, MD, and Terry Fulmer, PhD, RN, FAAN, "Nursing Home Deaths Are Predictable."
The blog explores the hard to acknowledge fact that a large number of nursing home residents will die of COVID-19 and "that rate of deaths does not, in itself, indicate any shortcoming on the part of the staff."
The authors talk about how to slow the spread, what nursing homes need, best approaches going forward, including support from public officials, and a current nursing home-related bill before Congress. "And we need to extend sincere sympathy for the residents, workers and families affected by a peculiarly effective virus that is all too often lethal when it infects frail elderly people."
