ASA Generations Now: Advancing a National Plan on Aging Through Community Listening
The American Society on Aging (ASA) has published a new Generations Now article on "Advancing a National Plan on Aging Through Community Listening."
The authors discuss a community meeting in Dallas where older adults shared their experiences and challenges related to aging. This session was one of four hosted by the Interagency Coordinating Committee on Healthy Aging and Age-Friendly Communities (ICC), led by the Administration for Community Living (ACL) that are part of a broader effort to provide input on ACL's Aging in the United States: A Strategic Framework for a National Plan on Aging
The National Plan aims to improve aging experiences by incorporating the voices of older adults and addressing key issues like coordinated healthcare, supportive services and age-friendly communities. In addition to the feedback gathered from these sessions, feedback from roundtables and surveys hosted by ACL and collaborating organizations—JAHF, The SCAN Foundation and West Health—will help shape policies and future initiatives, including the 2025 White House Conference on Aging.
The article emphasizes the importance of continued community engagement and the need for collaboration at all levels to achieve a more inclusive, age-friendly society.
Co-authors are Kari Benson, deputy assistant secretary for aging; Kelly Cronin, deputy administrator for innovation and partnership; Jennifer Baker, advisor, and Adam Mosey, special assistant, all at ACL; Amy Herr, director of health policy, West Health and a member of ASA’s board of directors and its executive committee; Rani Snyder, vice president, program, and a member of ASA’s board of directors and its executive committee; and Scott Bane, senior program officer, both at JAHF; Narda Ipakchi, vice president, policy; and Erin Westphal, program officer, both at The SCAN Foundation.
