ASA Generations Today/Diverse Elders Coalition Article: It’s Time to Stop Neglecting the Needs of American Indian and Alaska Native Caregivers

Generations article2

The American Society on Aging's (ASA) Generations Today has published an article, "It’s Time to Stop Neglecting the Needs of American Indian and Alaska Native Caregivers."

The article talks about survey findings from the Diverse Elders Coalition (DEC) Caregiving Initiative research and cultural impacts of caregiving for American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) communities. "More than 40 percent of AI/AN caregivers reported having some or a great deal of difficulty with healthcare tasks, demonstrating a need for accessible, affordable healthcare services."

The writers note in addition that the "needs, issues and disparities faced by AI/AN caregivers and their older loved ones have been exacerbated during the COVID-19 pandemic." The article details some best practices outlined in the DEC's cultural competency training curriculum that may help service providers to better serve American Indian and Alaska Native caregivers.

This article represents the second in a series by the DEC to be published in Generations Today that highlights research from The Caregiving Initiative, a multiyear research project funded by The John A. Hartford Foundation.
