ASA Generations Today/Diverse Elders Coalition Article: We Must Support LGBT Caregivers Now More Than Ever

DEC article

The American Society on Aging's (ASA) Generations Today has published an article, "We Must Support LGBT Caregivers Now More Than Ever."

The article talks about findings from the Diverse Elders Coalition (DEC) 2019 national caregiving survey. LGBT caregivers were found to be older. In addition, "More than a quarter of LGBT caregivers are not known to the healthcare professionals providing care to their loved ones, nor are they allowed in the room with care recipients. Almost half (44.6 percent) of LGBT caregivers reported being the only person available to provide care for their loved ones." The pandemic has only worsened preexisting health inequities within the LGBT caregiving community.

The article notes some best practices outlined in DEC's cultural competency training curriculum to better support LGBT caregivers.

This article is part of a series by the DEC published in Generations Today that highlights research from The Caregiving Initiative, a multiyear research project funded by The John A. Hartford Foundation.
