Kaiser Health News/JAHF Event Video: How We Cope - Intimate Lessons From the Front-Lines of Family Caregiving
Kaiser Health News (KHN) hosted a panel discussion on November 20 sponsored by JAHF, "How We Cope: Intimate Lessons From the Front-Lines of Family Caregiving."
Every year, more than 34 million unpaid caregivers – mostly family members – provide essential aid to adults age 50 and older. The caregiver panel discussed emotional and practical challenges they face, how they cope with changing relationships, financial burdens and the distress that serious illness often provokes, and talked about where they find support.
Speakers were:
- Arthur Kleinman, MD, Professor of Medical Anthropology, Department of Social Medicine, Harvard University
- Rita Choula, MA, Director, Caregiving Projects, AARP’s Public Policy Institute
- Sheldon Friedman, Board Member, Well Spouse Association
- Barry Jacobs, PsyD, Principal, Health Management Associates
- Kimberly Street, Faculty Clinical Instructor, University of Maryland
- KHN columnist Judith Graham moderated the discussion
