FAIR Health Brief: Advancing Shared Decision Making Among Older Adults with Serious Health Conditions - Lessons from FAIR Health’s Grant-Funded Initiative

FAIR Health Report Advancing Shared Decision Making among Older Adults with Serious Health Conditions Lessons from FAIR Healths Grant Funded Initiative

FAIR Health has released a brief, "Advancing Shared Decision Making Among Older Adults with Serious Health Conditions: Lessons from FAIR Health’s Grant-Funded Initiative," on insights gained from surveys, website analytics and focus groups with patients, caregivers and providers.

In September 2022, FAIR Health launched five decision making aids designed for older adults with serious health conditions as the culminating products of an 18-month initiative, "A National Initiative to Advance Cost Information in Shared Decision Making for Serious Health Conditions." Their newly released brief shows the utility and importance of these shared decision-making tools for older adults with serious health conditions.

Findings from focus groups showed that older adults and family caregivers are frustrated by the lack of transparency in healthcare billing and costs. However, FAIR Health's tools, content, and resources serve as vehicles for patient empowerment, allowing older adults to meaningfully engage in their healthcare decision-making.

“These shared decision-making and healthcare engagement tools show promise for empowering older patients and their care partners when it comes to dealing with challenging healthcare issues and costs,” said Rani Snyder, JAHF Vice President of Program.

A news article in McKnight's Home Care further discusses the brief's findings.
