The Global Council on Brain Health (GCBH) has released a report, “Preserving Your Brain Health During Illness or Surgery: GCBH Recommendations to Prevent and Treat Delirium.”

The GCBH examined the impact of delirium and how to preserve adult brain health during illness or surgery. Delirium is a sudden change in thinking and may affect as many as half of all Americans 65 and older following a hospital admission. The report notes this serious medical condition “may be the most common medical complication you never heard of.”

The report contains statements on the state of the relevant science, as well as numerous recommendations and practical tips to help prevent and treat delirium. Complementing the text are infographics with helpful tips for patients, caregivers, health care providers and anesthesiologists who play a key role in preventing delirium.

AARP founded the GCBH in collaboration with Age UK.
