GEDC Skills Fair: Three Short Modules on Mobility in the Emergency Department

GEDC Skills Fair Three Short Modules on Mobility in the ED

The Geriatric Emergency Department Collaborative (GEDC) has released three new modules on Mobility in the Emergency Department as part of their online learning platform for emergency clinicians.

The three new modules, centered around Mobility Risks and Falls, are:

  • Case Study: This case study works through the case of Mr. Smith, an older adult who has fallen – a familiar situation on nearly every ED shift. The aim is to develop critical thinking about assessing his injuries and planning for safe discharge.
  • Interventions for Falls Prevention: This module reviews the basics of mobility assessments in older adults and introduces some simple strategies for incorporating either informal or formal mobility assessments into your practice.
  • The Gravity of Mobility Risks and Falls: This module discusses morbidity and mortality associated with falls, how normal changes in aging predispose a person to fall, and common clinical challenges in assessing an older adult who has fallen.

These three modules are part of GEDC's online learning platform, which contains courses designed to strengthen clinicians' care of older adults in the Emergency Department. The courses are for Allied Health Professionals, Healthcare Executives, Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, Pharmacists, Physicians, Physician Assistants, Resident Fellows, Social Workers, and Students.
