ASA Generations Article: The Positive Impact of Public Health Engagement in Healthy Aging During the COVID-19 Pandemic
The American Society on Aging's (ASA) Generations journal has published an article by Trust for America's Health (TFAH) and JAHF staff on "The Positive Impact of Public Health Engagement in Healthy Aging During the COVID-19 Pandemic."
The article - by TFAH President and CEO Nadine Garcia, TFAH Senior Policy Development Manager Megan Wolfe, JAHF Senior Program Officer Jane Carmody, JAHF Program Officer Nancy Wexler, and JAHF President Terry Fulmer - addresses the ramifications that the COVID-19 pandemic has had on older adults and the lack of prioritization on healthy aging. TFAH, in partnership with JAHF, has been working to expand the public health role in healthy aging, as well as better coordinate with age-friendly movements, both of which have contributed to a more efficient and effective COVID-19 response.
The article lays out solutions to address the significant gaps in the nation's public health infrastructure, such as modernizing the public health system and establishing public health partnerships with age-friendly movements. "Since 2017, JAHF has partnered with Trust for America’s Health (TFAH) to elevate healthy aging as a core public health function. This partnership resulted in the development of the Age-Friendly Public Health Systems (AFPHS) initiative to expand the role of public health in improving older adult health."
