Gero-Ed Track Kick-Off Panel—e-Frontiers: Navigating Aging Through Technology
Friday, October 16 from 11:00 am–12:00 pm
Sheraton Denver Downtown Hotel, Windows, Tower Building

Technology is paving the way for older adults who seek to age in place. Social workers must be informed about these emerging technologies so they can best address the complex medical, psychosocial, and environmental needs of older adults and their caregivers and influence how these technologies are implemented. The panelists will highlight aging-in-place technologies and the important role social work can play in shaping future developments. Discover how research informs practice with experts David Lindeman (Center for Technology and Aging) and Debra Parker Oliver (University of Missouri). 1 CE hour available through the Approved Continuing Education Program offered by CSWE (CE registration required). Learn more about the panelists here.

Looking for resources to use in class? This module contains materials that may be incorporated into lectures or presentations to help students understand how to assess and present to older adults and their families a range of health, monitoring, and connectivity technologies.

Person-Centered and Participant-Directed Competencies for Social Workers

Social work graduates need person-centered and participant-directed (PC/PD) competencies to work in community-based services for older adults and persons with disabilities. A pre-conference Faculty Development Institute (FDI) and a Gero-Ed Track panel session will provide the PC/PD philosophy and demonstrate strategies to infuse PC/PD competencies and content into generalist and advanced curricula. Attendees will receive a Toolkit with infusion strategies and teaching resources:

HPPAE-ness is 16 Years of Success
Friday, October 16 from 4:30–6:00 pm
Sheraton Denver Downtown Hotel, Columbine, Tower Building

The Hartford Partnership Program for Aging Education (HPPAE) celebrates 16 years of successfully recruiting and training social work students to be leaders in the field of aging. HPPAE continues to have a positive impact in several areas, including increasing the number of aging agencies available for field placements and equipping students with the knowledge and skills to effectively serve older adults. HPPAE has never been a “one size fits all” model. Schools of social work have adapted the model to fit the unique culture and needs of their communities. As a result, no two HPPAE programs look the same. In this session, panelists Amy DeGurian (University of Pittsburgh), Reeve Goldhaber (Boston University), Marilyn Luptak (University of Utah), and Deborah Winters (University of Southern California) will share best practices and innovations that have emerged over the course of their programs' history.
