The Foundation's grantee Thomas Cromwell of Home Centered Care Institute (HCCI) was recently mentioned in The New York Times article "The Doctor Is In, In Your House, That Is. The article expounds on the many benefits of Home-Based Primary Care (HBPC), a program in which Doctors provide primary care for elderly patients in the comfort of their home. This effort saves time and money, ensuring that the patient's need are fully met. The HBPC program is handled by the HCCI and was recently funded by The Foundation early of this year. In the article, Dr. Cromwell explains that Home Based Primary Care has been proven successful, "Research has shown, that these patients have better health outcomes, at a lower cost".
The program has demonstrated medical cost savings of $35 million, which equates to $1000-3000 per patient. With this program, many elderly patients who need help with basic task of daily life can stay at home rather than being forced to come in to the hospital. However, before a national dissemanation can occur, there must be proper polices in place to alignning doctors incentives with patients needs. This means that Medicare must be able to provide for the doctors who are willing to provide Home-Based Priamry Care.
