GSA Journalist in Aging Article in Politico: Will the Nursing Home of the Future be an Actual Home?

Politico has published an article authored by GSA Journalist in Aging fellow Rachel Roubein titled, "Will the Nursing Home of the Future be an Actual Home?

The article opens with an exploration of Geriatrician Dr. Bill Thomas's experience working in nursing homes. Many nursing home residents told Thomas that they were lonely and didn't enjoy living in an a nursing home. Thomas visited 125 cities, lunching with seniors and caregivers, and came to the conclusion that older people need their own homes and their own communities.

The article expands on how residential style senior living facilities have faired much better than traditional nursing homes throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Residential facilities also provide residents with a greater sense of community and desired privacy. Lastly, the article delves into the logistics of bringing care into a residential setting, including opinions from several industry experts.
