Iowa HCGNE Issues Call for Pilot Projects, Applications Due Sept. 1

The Iowa Hartford Center of Geriatric Nursing Excellence (HCGNE) is issuing a call for pilot projects that focus on nursing interventions for older adults. The goal is to fund three pilot projects per year. Pilots grant awards will be no more than $10,000, with a home institution cash match of $5,000, for a total project budget of $15,000. Applications due: September 1, 2013.

Purpose
The Iowa Hartford Center of Geriatric Nursing Excellence (HCGNE) is issuing a call for pilot projects that focus on nursing interventions for older adults. The goal is to fund three pilot projects per year.

Amount
Pilots grant awards will be no more than $10,000, with a home institution cash match of $5,000, for a total project budget of $15,000.

Eligibility/Expectations
Funds are available to PhD prepared investigators, both nurses and collaborators in related sciences within the National Centers of Gerontological Nursing. Investigators in other disciplines are welcome to partner with a nurse PI to submit a proposal.

Funds are targeted to support new investigators as well as established investigators beginning a new research focus. It is expected that the pilot projects lead to competitive R-level proposals. Cross institutional projects are strongly encouraged.

Application Process
The application must be on PHS 398 forms. Please use the appropriate pages for the following:

Abstract page (250 words maximum)

Budget & Justification The budget may not exceed $15,000. Budget pages should include allocation of funds between categories given below and include full justification.

  • Personnel
  • Equipment
  • Travel for data collection
  • Supplies
  • Other Expenses

Please note that the following costs are customarily NOT allowed:

  • computers, PI salary;
  • F&A (indirect) costs;

Biographical Sketch (for PI and all other investigators)

Narrative Seven (7) pages single-spaced and organized as follows, based on the NIH format:

  1. Specific Aims (1/2 page)
  2. Research Strategy (includes timeline) [6 pages]: Significance, Innovation, Approach
  3. Relationship to the Iowa HCGNE (1/2 page) including how the proposed project will lead to an R01 application. This section should address how the project relates to gerontological nursing and innovative research. It should also demonstrate that the PI will present progress to the Iowa HCGNE Executive Committee when requested, will report all related publications and grants emanating from this award, and will aid in the development of an evidence-based clinical protocol, as appropriate
  4. Human Subjects: you must address this issue in accordance with NIH guidelines. Be complete and detailed – use SF424 instructions as a guide.

Appendices of instruments and full-size versions of tables and figures in the proposal may be attached.

A cover letter of endorsement from the departmental chair, and a statement of commitment from the Dean or designated individual to the $5,000 institutional cash match for the project.

Funding Acknowledgement
Recipients of IHCGNE funds are required to acknowledge funding in subsequent publications and presentations, provide a written annual report to the Executive Committee and report orally to the Committee when requested.

Submission Information

Applications due: September 1, 2013
Award Notice: October 14, 2013
Award Dates: January 1, 2014 - December 31, 2015

Timeline of Progress of Grant:
Date Things to complete
Upon Receipt of Award Letter (around October 14)

  • Apply for IRB approval. Spending of award funds cannot begin until IRB approval is obtained.
  • Meet with Grants Management Specialist to review guidelines and resources available through the ONR.
  • Finalize written, detailed plan for recruiting and enrolling participants.
  • Finalize written, detailed protocol for conducting the proposed research that includes information about how you will obtain consent, administer all study procedures and instruments, etc.

3-month Progress Check: (around March 31)

  • Have secured IRB approval for project.
  • Have 25% of participants/sites recruited.
  • Have a developed a plan for data management and analysis in consultation with the statistician who assisted you with your original proposal.

6-month Progress Check: (around June 30)

  • Have 50% of data collection completed.

9-month Progress Check: (around September 30)

  • Have 75% of data collection completed.
  • Have a poster abstract submitted for MNRS (deadline is September 1 of each year).

December 31 Grant ends
One month post-award = January 30

  • Have Final Report of project outcomes submitted electronically to Bonnie Kinkead by 5 PM.
  • Have submitted a presentation for at least one major research conference besides MNRS (e.g., GSA, AGHE).
  • Have prepared a written plan for how you will secure extramural funding that includes the names of prospective funding agencies and your timeframe for submitting the proposal.

6 months post-award = June 30

  • Have prepared an update on publications and presentations resulting from your Hartford pilot.
  • Have identified at least one funding opportunity, informed the ONR of your intent to submit a proposal, and be actively writing the proposal.
