JAHF Briefing Recording: Medicaid Spending Reductions - Implications for Older Adults
The John A. Hartford Foundation held a virtual, nonpartisan briefing March 20 on, "Medicaid Spending Reductions: Implications for Older Adults." The slides from the briefing are available to download.
Congress is considering ways to decrease Medicaid spending that could affect older adults and family caregivers across the country. At the moment, Medicaid covers 9 million older adults ages 65+ and nearly two-thirds of nursing home residents rely on Medicaid coverage.
Medicare does not cover long-term care, though many believe it does. For millions of older people, Medicaid covers help in the home with activities like eating, bathing and dressing. Medicare does not. Policymakers should consider how decreases in Medicaid spending affect older adults, family caregivers, state budgets and local economies across America.
The briefing explored proposed Medicaid spending reductions and their impact on older adults and family caregivers. Speakers included:
- Terry Fulmer, PhD, RN, FAAN (introductory remarks), president, The John A. Hartford Foundation
- Rani E. Snyder, MPA (moderator), vice president, program, The John A. Hartford Foundation
- Kevin Prindiville, JD, executive director, Justice in Aging
- Tricia Neuman, ScD, MHS, senior vice president and executive director for Program on Medicare Policy, KFF
