Justice in Aging Blogs: Centering Vaccination Planning on Equity - Intersecting Considerations of Age, Race, and More
Justice in Aging has published two blogs. The first blog is on, "Centering Vaccination Planning on Equity: Intersecting Considerations of Age, Race, and More," and the second blog is on, "Equitable Vaccine Distribution for Older Adults Requires a Tailored Approach and Key Principles."
The first blog discusses several points advocates should consider advocating for in order to ensure that state vaccine allocation and distributions plans are centered around equity and the intersectional needs of older adults. The blog notes that, "States have been given considerable discretion in crafting the specifics of their vaccine allocation and distribution plans based on guidance from the CDC and other federal frameworks." One of the recommendations the blog encourages advocates to consider is to prioritize communities most impacted and most at risk of infection and death from COVID-19. As states continue to modify their vaccination distribution plans to reach as many individuals as possible, these principles remain important.
The second blog notes that, "As the COVID-19 vaccine rollout bumps along and vaccinations for older adults have begun on a large scale, it is clear that, although supply is a problem, a bigger problem is that some older adults in the communities hardest hit by COVID-19 are not able to access the vaccine due to other barriers," from technology and transportation to logistics and language. The blog lays out six principles for states and local health departments as best practices to center equity for older adults in the vaccine process. "Following these principles creates a foundation for a more equitable response to a pandemic that has ravaged the country and its older adults in the most inequitable of ways."
