KFF Data Brief: A Look at Nursing Facility Characteristics in 2025
KFF has published a data brief, “A Look at Nursing Facility Characteristics in 2025,” examining the landscape of nursing facilities and the potential implications of the 2025 reconciliation law. A related set of indicators on nursing facilities in KFF's State Health Facts database has also been updated.
The authors, Priya Chidambaram and Alice Burns, note that the reconciliation law could have major implications for nearly 15,000 federally certified nursing facilities and the more than 1.2 million people living in them. While the law does not directly reduce nursing facility services, changes to Medicaid policy may result in reduced payments for nursing facility care and fewer people qualifying for Medicaid coverage.
The brief examines the characteristics of nursing facilities and the people living in them with data from Nursing Home Compare, a publicly available dataset.
In addition, KFF has updated a related set of indicators on nursing facilities in its State Health Facts database.
These resources are especially useful for policymakers and consumer advocates at both the federal and state levels.
