Laura N. Gitlin Co-Authors Guide to Dementia Caregiving

Hartford grantee Laura N. Gitlin, director of the Center for Innovative Care in Aging at the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing, and Catherine Verrier Piersol, clinical director of Jefferson Elder Care at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia recently released a book that serves as a guide for dementia caregiving. The book offers straightforward advice for those with loved ones who are suffering from the debilitating effects of dementia.

The book offers straightforward advice for those with loved ones who are suffering from the debilitating effects of dementia.

The book, titled A Caregiver's Guide to Dementia: Using Activities and Other Strategies to Prevent, Reduce and Manage Behavioral Symptoms, addresses a wide range of situations, including incontinence, inappropriate sexual behavior and repetitive questions.

Dr. Gitlin, an applied research sociologist, is nationally and internationally recognized in the areas of nonpharmacologic approaches in dementia care, family caregiving, functional disability and aging in place.
