Lown Institute Hospital Index
The Lown Institute has created a hospital index that evaluates hospitals’ performance based on how well they treat their patients, their commitment to providing high-value care, and their investment in community health.
The Lown Institute is a nonpartisan think tank. The hospitals index is the first to measure how well hospitals serve people of color and people with lower incomes, examine how well a hospital’s staff are paid compared to executives, and assess how nonprofit hospitals are spending their tax-exempt dollars.
The index includes rankings by hospital name, location, type, and other metrics. It is based on Medicare claims data and includes a white paper describing the methodology used, as well as featured insights--like this one addressing disparities in patient outcomes at safety net hospitals.
