The Moving Forward Nursing Home Quality Coalition held a webinar September 8 on, "Stability Starts with Support: Immigration, Workforce Policy, and Nursing Homes."
Immigrant workers are essential to the stability and quality of care in nursing homes, allowing older adults and people with disabilities to live with dignity and receive the care they need. As the long-term care sector faces a major workforce crisis, immigrant workers are a critical part of the solution. However, they face additional vulnerabilities tied to immigrant status, including restrictive visa programs, uncertainty surrounding temporary protected status, and other shifting policy conditions that threaten both their well-being and the stability of the nursing home workforce.
This Coalition Conversation webinar featured David C. Grabowski, PhD, who discussed the role of immigrant workers in nursing homes. Grabowski shared findings from recent research on the impact of immigrant CNAs on nursing home staffing and resident care.
The Moving Forward Coalition has submitted formal comments to the Department of Labor on proposed changes to the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), emphasizing how home care workforce policies ripple across care settings—including nursing homes—and affect the stability of the entire system.
