NASEM Report: Social Isolation and Loneliness in Older Adults

Nasem 1

The National Academies of Sciences Engineering Medicine (NASEM) has released a report, “Social Isolation and Loneliness in Older Adults.”

"While there are challenges in measuring social isolation and loneliness precisely, there is strong evidence that many older adults are socially isolated or lonely in ways that puts their health at risk," the report states.

The report evaluates the evidence for the impacts of social isolation and loneliness on mortality and morbidity, assesses the role of the healthcare system, the current state of research, and the risk and protective factors for social isolation and loneliness. Recommendations are given specifically for clinical settings of health care to identify those who suffer the resultant negative health impacts of social isolation and loneliness and target interventions to improve their social conditions.
