NASEM Workshop: Advancing Equity in Diagnostic Excellence to Reduce Health Disparities

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) is holding a public workshop September 23 and 24 on "Advancing Equity in Diagnostic Excellence to Reduce Health Disparities." It is being held both online and in-person in Washington D.C.

The workshop will explore current opportunities for improving equitable diagnosis within the U.S. health care system, with emphasis on populations at greatest risk of harm from diagnostic errors.

  • Day 1: Monday, September 23, 8:30am - 4pm ET
  • Day 2: Tuesday, September 24, 8:30am - 12:30pm ET

The workshop will feature invited presentations and discussions on:

  • Factors that create barriers in access to high-quality diagnosis
  • Strategies to reduce barriers to access, including ways to leverage community-centered approaches
  • Approaches to professional education and development to increase clinician cultural competence and awareness
  • The role of technologies and diagnostic innovations in reducing diagnostic disparities
  • Development and validation of measures for diagnostic equity
  • Research gaps and opportunities to enhance data collection for historically underrepresented and marginalized communities
