NASEM Workshop Supporting and Sustaining the Current and Future Workforce to Care for People with Serious Illness

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) Roundtable on Quality Care for People with Serious Illness convened a public workshop April 27-28 on, "Supporting and Sustaining the Current and Future Workforce to Care for People with Serious Illness."

The workshop explored issues related to supporting and sustaining the interdisciplinary workforce to care for people with serious illness, featuring presentations and discussions that explored topics such as:

  • The significant impact of the pandemic (workforce shortages, moral distress, trauma) on the workforce caring for people with serious illness
  • The importance of leadership, partnerships, and care delivery models (such as palliative care) to help support the well-being of all members of the interdisciplinary team caring for people with serious illness
  • Ways in which health care institutions and organizations, professional associations and other health care partners can advance diversity, equity, and inclusion within the workforce caring for people with serious illness

The NASEM Roundtable on Quality Care for People with Serious Illness is in part supported by The John A. Hartford Foundation.
