NASHP Interactive Map Series on Family Caregiver Respite Services

Respite Care

The National Academy for State Health Policy (NASHP) has released a series of interactive maps and a blog as part of its project exploring family caregiver respite services across the United States. A third map is now available on Medicaid Managed Long-Term Services and Supports.

Respite care is essential for family caregivers, as it allows them to rest while their loved ones are cared for by another professional. NASHP, in partnership with the ARCH National Respite Network and Resource Center and support of the U.S. Administration for Community Living, are collaborating on a three-year project to promote best practices and build state capacity for respite care. The goal of this project is to support and foster state and national efforts, including those of the RAISE Advisory Council, to increase access to respite for family caregivers.

As part of the project, a series of interactive maps explores respite services in the U.S. The following maps are part of the series:

State Caps on Respite Waiver Services Vary Greatly
The first map explores numeric caps on respite services for adults and children.

State Respite Care Spending is Low in Most Home and Community-Based 1915(c) Waivers
The second map in the series explores the percentage each state spends on respite care and adult day services for older adults and adults with physical disabilities out of their total 1915(c) waiver cost.

MLTSS State Coverage of Respite Care and Adult Day Services
The third map in the series explores how states cover respite care and adult day services through Medicaid Managed Long-Term Services and Supports (MLTSS) — including who is eligible for these services and how states cap respite services.

NASHP recently released a blog on their findings from the three maps, State Respite Care and Adult Day Services Policies.

The Respite project is part of The RAISE Family Caregiver Resource and Dissemination Center.
