NASHP Palliative Care: FAQs for State Policymakers
The National Academy for State Health Policy (NASHP) has released a palliative care FAQ for state policymakers that answers frequently raised questions about palliative care.
Nearly half of the states have a palliative care taskforce or advisory council through state legislation.
Over the past five years, NASHP has worked closely with state policymakers who are interested in increasing access to palliative care so that people who are seriously ill can get needed care while avoiding costly, unwanted, or unnecessary care. NASHP is running a six-state two-year learning collaborative to improve care for people with serious illness by exploring a Medicaid benefit for community-based palliative care.
The FAQ answers questions that are most asked by states, including how state Medicaid programs are paying for palliative care and whether community-based palliative care is cost effective.
