NASHP RAISE Act State Policy Roadmap for Family Caregivers: Part 2 - Engagement of Family Caregivers in Health Care Systems
The National Academy for State Health Policy (NASHP) has released section 2 of its RAISE Act State Policy Roadmap for Family Caregivers, "Engagement of Family Caregivers in Health Care Systems."
The purpose of the roadmap is to support states that are interested in developing and expanding supports for family caregivers of older adults by offering practical resources on identifying and implementing innovative and emerging policy strategies. This particular section outlines strategies states can use to engage family caregivers as key partners in planning and providing care.
Family caregivers have a valuable role in both health care and LTSS systems. They provide services that might otherwise need to be provided by paid caregivers, and often make it possible for their family members to live at home. However, current health care and LTSS systems are fragmented and not well-designed to support family caregivers, and in addition, family caregivers may need training to recognize signs and symptoms that signal a change in care needs. The report lays out recommendations and state strategies.
