NASHP Report: State Approaches to Family Caregiver Education, Training, and Counseling
The National Academy for State Health Policy (NASHP) has released a report, "State Approaches to Family Caregiver Education, Training, and Counseling."
Family caregivers often provide intense care to individuals with long-term needs, and education, training, and counseling services offered through state Medicaid waivers can provide important tools to them. NASHP examined education and counseling available through Medicaid waivers across the nation to highlight states’ unique approaches to supporting caregivers.
NASHP found that twenty-four states include education, training and counseling for family caregivers in their 1915c and/or 1115 waivers; several states make distinctions between paid and unpaid caregivers, and define informal or unpaid caregivers using a range of familial relationships. They also reported on training and education offered by states, caregiver-specific services, and inclusion of these in assessments and care plans. In addition, NASHP released a state interactive map that provides highlights of available education, training, and counseling services for family caregivers in Medicaid waivers.
