National Academy for State Health Policy Blog: Update on Medicaid Section 1115 Waivers
The National Academy for State Health Policy (NASHP) has published a blog providing an update on Medicaid Section 1115 waivers.
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has approved several Section 1115 demonstration waivers with a focus on extending coverage through several key areas:
- Continuous Eligibility: Multi-year continuous eligibility for children with the aim to reduce healthcare costs and improve access to care. This approach also benefits children with chronic conditions and enhancing school readiness.
- Support for Individuals Transitioning from Incarceration: Reentry waivers that provide coordinated care for individuals exiting correctional facilities. This approach approves health outcomes and reduce recidivism among formerly incarcerated people.
- Health-Related Social Needs: Addresses social needs that impact health outcomes. These waivers cover support like housing and nutrition services to improve health and reduce medical costs.
The blog notes that CMS approved several waivers in the final month of the Biden-Harris administration, with states like Arizona, Colorado, Hawaii, Maryland, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Utah and Vermont receiving new approvals.
