National Alliance for Caregiving Report: Supporting Diverse Family Caregivers - A Guide For Patient Advocacy Groups
The National Alliance for Caregiving (NAC) has released a new guidebook, "Supporting Diverse Family Caregivers: A Guide for Patient Advocacy Groups," which includes fact sheets developed by the Diverse Elders Coalition.
Through research with professional patient advocacy groups and diverse family caregivers in the condition areas of lung cancer, heart disease, blood cancer and lupus, the publication addresses the impact of culture and identity on the way that family caregivers provide care. The guide introduces ways in which patient advocacy groups can support their caregiving experience through culturally responsive resources and supports. A key takeaways brief summarizes the publication.
The Diverse Elders Coalition contributed "What Providers Should Know: Factsheets About Diverse Family Caregivers" to the guide, which offers supporting evidence documenting the unique needs of African American and Black, American Indian and Alaska Native, Chinese and Korean American, Southeast Asian American, Hispanic and Latino, and LGBTQ+ family caregivers. The factsheets are available in English and in Spanish (and can also be found at the bottom of DEC's Family Caregivers webpage). They are based on research funded by JAHF.
