New York Times Op-Ed: The Decline in Geriatric Care Hurts Us All
The New York Times has published an Op-Ed by Pamela Paul, "The Decline in Geriatric Care Hurts Us All," on the urgent need for a stronger focus on geriatrics in healthcare and using the Age-Friendly Health Systems "4Ms" framework to embed geriatric care across health systems.
Pamela Paul, an Opinion columnist at The New York Times, notes that the number of older adults is increasing faster than it has in more than 100 years. She emphasizes the need to address the geriatrician shortage and talks about the complexities of treating older adults. She notes one key solution, "The central model for geriatric care is called the 4Ms, which stands for medication, mentation, mobility and 'what matters most.'”
In the Op-Ed, the author talks with clinicians who are using the Age Friendly Health Systems 4Ms framework and notes that Medicare's new requirement for hospitals to report on an Age-Friendly Hospital Measure, based on the 4Ms, will help embed geriatric care across health systems.
