Next Avenue Article: 5 Common Questions About Nursing Home Care
Next Avenue has published an article that answers five common questions about nursing home care, by Terry Fulmer, PhD, RN, FAAN, president of The John A. Hartford Foundation.
The five common questions discussed in the article are:
- When is a nursing home stay needed and for how long?
- Who cares for me in a nursing home?
- What will it cost?
- How have nursing homes changed?
- How do I choose a nursing home?
The articles notes that, "Seven out of 10 of us who turn 65 will at some point need long-term care services. While most of us will get that care at home – most often from family caregivers – some will require a level of medical care that makes moving into a nursing home the right option. A nursing home is a communal living facility providing 24-hour on-site services such as nursing care, physical therapy and assistance with everyday activities like bathing, eating or walking."
Dr. Fulmer notes that, "Importantly, nursing homes are not all alike. Many nursing homes are beautiful, safe environments that help people thrive, no matter their physical and mental condition. Others desperately need radical changes, which my organization and many others are calling for right now."
The article is part of a Next Avenue special report series on The Future of Elder Care, supported by The John A. Hartford Foundation.
