GSA Journalist in Aging Article in Palabra: Contra-Vax
Palabra has published an article authored by GSA Journalist in Aging fellow Jenny Manrique, titled "Contra Vax."
The article explores the experiences of Hispanic Americans during the pandemic and the various views within the Hispanic community about COVID-19 vaccines. 69 year old Graciela Navarrete, who contracted the virus last year, is quoted, "The virus gave me very bad headaches and I still struggle when walking, so I accepted the medicines. But I am definitely not getting vaccinated." Author Jenny Manrique documents multiple factors that contribute to vaccine hesitation in the Hispanic community such as the speed at which the vaccines were developed, conspiracy theories, and lack of health insurance.
The article also references data from the Kaiser Family Foundation about vaccine rollout in communities with a high Hispanic population. The article is accompanied by a video report filmed and produced by Jorge Melchor.
