Richard Besdine Pens Article in Huffington Post on Elder Abuse

In a recent article published in the Huffington Post, Dr. Richard Besdine wrote about how elder abuse is a financial issue with serious health-related risks.

In a recent article published in the Huffington Post, Dr. Richard Besdine wrote about how elder abuse is a financial issue with serious health-related risks.

"The damage goes well beyond the financial, but the sheer dollar amount is high. A widely used estimate from the MetLife Mature Market Institute is $2.9 billion per year, but a more recent study, the 2015 True Link Senior Vulnerability Survey, suggests both a higher number of victims and losses that may total more than $36 billion per year," according to Dr. Besdine.

Along with Dr. Besdine, other Hartford grantees wer also mentioned in the article includes Dr. Mark Lachs and Dr. Janey Peterson, both of whom were Beeson Scholars, along with Dr. Terry Fulmer, current President of the Foundation. Dr. Fulmer's academic work has focused extensively on elder abuse.

"We must make screening for fraud a standard practice," said Dr. Fulmer.

Dr Besdine is a Medical Officer for the American Federation for Aging Research (AFAR) and Professor of Medicine, Greer Professor of Geriatric Medicine, Director of the Center for Gerontology and Health Care Research, and Director of the Division of Geriatrics in the Department of Medicine at Alpert Medical School of Brown University. He is also former Chief Medical Officer of the federal Health Care Financing Administration (now the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid).
