RUSH Caring for Caregivers Story: Grant-supported Program Expands to Empower More Caregivers
RUSH University Medical Center has published an article on Rush Stories, "Grant-supported Program Expands to Empower More Caregivers."
The article highlights the story of family caregiver Gina Lowell, MD, a general pediatrician at RUSH University Medical Center and director of community health for the Department of Pediatrics, on the challenges she experiences caring for her 88-year-old mother.
To help navigate her role as a caregiver, Dr. Lowell reached out to Ellen L. Carbonell, LCSW, assistant professor in the Department of Social Work and consultant for caregiver programs at RUSH, and was connected to the Caring for Caregivers program at RUSH. This program is a systematic, person-centered approach that offers support, including physical and emotional health assessments, to ensure caregivers are able to successfully perform their tasks. Sessions with a licensed clinical social worker to develop a plan that meets the needs of the care recipient are also part of the program.
