Rush Center for Excellence in Aging Interview: Age Isn't a Specialty—It's the Future of Healthcare
In a blog for Vizient's Suite Talk leadership series, Robyn Golden and Molly Jenkins of the Rush Center for Excellence in Aging share how Rush University System for Health is rethinking care for older adults.
As the U.S. population ages, they argue, health systems must move beyond treating aging as a specialty and instead embed age-friendly principles across the system. “We can no longer wait for people to specialize in aging,” Golden said. “Everyone is going to work with older adults.”
Based on Rush's approach, they outline five strategies for health systems: embedding age-friendly care across settings, preparing the workforce to care for older adults, securing leadership buy-in, investing in community and caregiver supports, and redefining quality around what matters most to patients and caregivers.
Throughout, they offer practical recommendations and examples that health system leaders can use to strengthen care for older adults while improving quality, patient experience and outcomes.
