The Society to Improve Diagnosis in Medicine (SIDM) has published two articles in it's January newsletter, ImproveDX, that focus on older adults and detail ways to improve diagnostic excellence.

Improving Health Outcomes for Older Adults, A SIDM Seed Grant and Fellowship Help Explore Solutions: The article discusses "lift-assist" calls - when an older adult falls and can’t get up, emergency medical teams make decisions about how to treat patients on the scene. The article talks about a multidisciplinary team of EMS clinicians in New York's project to improve assessment of geriatric fall patients - supported by a DxQI Seed Grant - addressing contributing factors in misdiagnoses, and piloting new tools and processes.

How Seniors Can Avoid Misdiagnosis: Experts believe, the article notes, that misdiagnosis happens more frequently for older patients, and it describes in detail what may contribute to misdiagnosis. Specific steps that patients and their support team can take in order to get an accurate diagnosis when they visit their doctor - before, during, and after - are explained in detail.
